West Bengal's CID Website Hacked

Sunday, October 30, 2011:  The website of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal was hacked by an organisation known as the Muslim Liberation Army. The access to the website, cidwestbengal.gov.in was blocked recently after officials discovered the cyber invasion.

The Muslim Liberation Army wants to alert the Indian Government of the killing of children, raping of women and imprisonment of innocent men in Jammu and Kashmir through this hacking act. 



The organisation says: “This institutionalised impunity with which the killings of civilians by military and police forces in Jammu and Kashmir continues should be a source of shame for India which propagates to be a democracy!”

It also states that the armed forces are responsible for over hundred deaths of innocent people in a day. They claim that the protector themselves have turned into murderers and rapists.

John McCarthy, AI And LISP Pioneer, Dies

Wednesday, October 26, 2011:  John McCarthy, the man who coined the term artificial intelligence (AI), dies at the age of 84. The news was tweeted by Stanford University where McCarthy was a professor emeritus of computer science.

McCarthy, a doctorate in mathematics, never took the credit of his eminent work in the field of AI. He was widely considered one of the founding fathers of the field. McCarthy will always hold a prime spot in its history because of his development of the programming language used in AI. LISP is one the most-used high-level programming languages today. Only Fortran is older than the language and that too by just one year. 




McCarthy believed that human intelligence can be understood and described succinctly enough that it can be taught to a machine.

During an interview for the book Thinking Allowed: Conversations On the Leading Edge of Knowledge and Discovery, with Dr Jeffrey Mishlove, he said, “I started my work in artificial intelligence in about '56, although I became really interested in it before that, in '49, when I was a beginning graduate student in mathematics. I would say that the field has made somewhat less progress than I hoped, although I didn't have any definite opinion as to how fast it would progress. I think that it had and still has difficult conceptual problems to solve before we can get computer programs that are as intelligent as humans.”

Describing one of the hardest things about AI as giving machines a self-awareness of their part in the world, he said, “One part of the problem is to develop language in which we can express for our computer programs the facts and reasoning about the common-sense world that humans have, and that is necessary in order to behave intelligently. A machine isn't the sum of its parts. If somebody took a car apart and gave you a heap of the parts, that wouldn't be a car. They have to be connected in a specified way and interacting in a specified way, and so if you want to say that the mind is a structure composed of parts interacting in a specialised way, I would agree with that, but it isn't just a heap of them."

McCarthy received Kyoto Prize, the Japanese equivalent of the Nobel Prize, for lifetime contributions to computer science and artificial intelligence in 1988.

TV show builds simulator worth 3 crore to play Battlefield 3

Many of us are going gaga over EA’s latest installment of the Battlefield multiplayer war simulation. UID evangelists set up business incubator

BANGALORE: Three veterans from the technology sector who were previously advisers to Nandan Nilekani's unique identification ( UID) project have established a business incubator firm called Angel Prime in Bangalore to mentor and build startups right from the ideation stage. 

The three co-founders, Bala Parthasarathy, Shripati Acharya and Sanjay Swamy, between them have years of experience in technology giants like Cisco and HP and in setting up startups. Parthasarathy and Acharya were among the cofounders of Snapfish, the web-based photosharing and photo printing service that was bought by Hewlett-Packard in 2005. 


 


Swamy was CEO of mobile payment platform firmmChek between 2006 and 2010. The trio will act as general partners and have raised a fund from 12 individual investors. 

The investments they make are typically in the sub $1 million range and would be made in 2 to 4 companies at a time. 
Incubators provide mentorship services, offer real estate and infrastructure as well as industry contacts to the startup. They come in prior to the angel investor or venture capital (VC) investment stage, when the company is a mere business idea. They take stakes in these companies and could exit at a later stage when strategic investors enter. 

Parthasarathy said that Angel Prime would focus on the domain expertise of the team, which includes mobile payments, e-commerce as well as smart phone and tablet phone applications. He said they understand the common mistakes entrepreneurs make and can help them scale to a stage where they attract institutional funding. 

Angel Prime is currently incubating a startup in the mobile payments space, an announcement on which is expected within the next month. It will also unveil a company in the e-commerce space in the within 90 days, Parthasarathy said. 

Sachin Maheshwari, director at growth stage fund Zephyr Peacock, said that in India business incubators have generally been the forte of large government institutions like the IITs and IIMs. Outside of the universities, incubation is a relatively new phenomenon, the most notable being Morpheus and eBhana. 

Morpheus co-founder Sameer Guglani calls incubation outside of universities as accelerators. He said that universities primarily provide infrastructure and plug and play facilities on a rental basis, while accelerators add greater value through mentorship, contacts, funding etc. 

Business accelerators are popular in the US. Investments are made in different batches of say six months, after which the role of the accelerator becomes more consultative. 

Guglani said one major reason why the concept has not caught on in India is that it works on a fee or commission basis. As these funds are typically small in size, the earnings of general partners are not as lucrative as in the case of a VC fund. Morpheus for instance recently raised a new fund of Rs 6 crore. 

Despite this, more incubators are said to be in the works. Senior professionals from India and those returning from abroad are looking for something more exciting to do with their time. And thanks to the emergence of newer technologies, talented skill base and lower costs, the Indian entrepreneur is generally viewed as promising.

Blogger (Blogspot) Integrating With Google

Earlier today, we reported that Google’s upcoming music service is integrating with Google+ and now we’ve news that Google is looking to integrate their popular blogging platform called ‘blogger’ aka ‘blogspot’ with Google+. It seems that Google’s trying to integrate all their popular social services with Google+. Whether this move is profitable or not; only time will decide. However, we’re quite sure that integration of blogger and Google+ will give blogspot users a reason to check out Google+. This also means that Google+ will have additional features like ‘blog this’ and blogger profiles could be replaced by Google+ profiles.

We’d also expect commenting system currently available in blogger will be integrated with Google plus. There’s however a big issue at this moment – commenters don’t want to show the world their real name in comments and Google+ makes it compulsory for every user to display their real name. There are rumors that Google is actually reviewing this policy and may soon allow nicknames on Google+. If they do, they’ll have a fair chance of competing with Facebook – the current social networking giant. We’d like to ask our readers whether they think integration of popular Google services with the Gplus platform is a good move or not.

Tuesday, October 25, 2011:  If you are keen to know what researches are being done at Indian Institute Of Technology (IITs), this one is for you. Students of the IITs are working to collect the details of their research and make it available through a common website for all the institutes. The website is likely to be launched which the students plan to launch by the end of November.

This was a conclusion derived out of a two-day long summit of IIT students called 'Inter-IIT Gymkhana Summit 2011' which began at IIT-Gandhinagar (IIT-GN) on Saturday. Students from all IITs discussed issues which were affecting them in common. The summit was attended by student representatives from 10 IITs including IIT Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Rajasthan, Mandi, Ropar, Indore, Madras and Hyderabad. IIT Kanpur and Bombay joined the sessions online. 


  According to a TOI report, the students emphasised on how they could share research works of students of B Tech, M Tech and PhD students. The argument was that the students are unaware of past researches, they often repeat the same research. If all the past researches are available online, this repetition can be avoided.

The report quoted Kalyan Surapanani, an IIT alumnus, saying, “Students can take forward researches undertaken by other students and carry it forward towards advanced stages. A rich database of a wide range of research could also become a very useful learning resource.”

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise is a highly lucrative one spawning many games, merchandise and now if reports are to be believed, a movie. iTunes creator to lead Apple's TV unit

AN FRANCISCO: Apple Inc's turning to the software engineer who built iTunes to help lead its development of a television set, according to three people with knowledge of the project.

Jeff Robbin, who helped create the iPod in addition to the iTunes media store, is now guiding Apple's internal development of the new TV effort, said the people, who declined to be identified because his role isn't public.

  

Robbin's involvement is a sign of Apple's commitment to extending its leadership insmartphones and tablets into the living room. Before his October 5 death, Apple co-founderSteve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he had "finally cracked" how to build an integrated TV with a simple user interface that would wirelessly synchronize content with Apple's other devices.

"It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine," Jobs told Isaacson in the biography "Steve Jobs," released today by CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster.

Trudy Muller, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, declined to comment. Outside of Jobs's remarks in the book, Apple hasn't acknowledged that it's developing a TV set. According to one person, it's not guaranteed that Apple will release a television.

Until now, the company's TV efforts have been limited to Apple TV, a small $99 gadget that plugs in to a TV and gives users access to content from iTunes, Netflix Inc's streaming service and YouTube. Jobs had called it Apple's "hobby," rather than something designed to be a serious moneymaker.

Prototype model   

That may be changing. Apple has a prototype TV in the works and may introduce a product for sale by late next year or 2013, according to Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray Cos. He based that timing on meetings with contacts close to Apple's suppliers in Asia, industry contacts and Apple's patent portfolio. Munster said Apple also is investing in manufacturing facilities and securing supplies of LCD screens.

Apple's introduction of the voice-command software Siri and Web-storage service iCloud also could be used for a future television, Munster said in a note to investors today. Siri may help search for videos, while iCloud allows customers to store video, music, pictures and other content on the company's servers instead of their own hard drives.

One of Apple's goals for a new TV is to let users more seamlessly search for a show or movie, said one of the people. For example, instead of having to separately check to see if a movie or show is available through Netflix or a cable service, all the material could be integrated, this person said.

Samsung, Sony

Building a full TV set would put Apple in closer competition with consumer-electronics companies such as Samsung Electronics Co. and Sony Corp Apple could sell 1.4 million TVs next year, out of about 220 million flat-panel sets for the total market, according to Munster. That could add $6 billion in revenue to the company's top line by 2014, he said.

Google Inc, which competes with Apple in the smartphone market, also is attempting to attract customers to an operating system it has created for televisions. Unlike that approach, Apple would be building both the hardware and the software.

Along with a television, Apple also may be considering new business models for delivering video. Among the ideas, Apple has discussed whether to try to start a subscription TV service, media executives said last year.

Apple rose 3.3 per cent to $405.77 at the close in New York today. The shares have climbed 26 per cent this year.

SoundJam player

Robbin, the software engineer helping lead the TV effort, was hired in 2000 to develop iTunes after Apple bought the SoundJam digital music player he developed. ITunes, introduced in January 2001, became Apple's digital hub for synchronizing music, video and applications across Apple's devices, including the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

According to the biography, Jobs considered Robbin such a valuable employee that he wouldn't let a Time magazine reporter meet him without agreeing not to print his last name, for fear that he would be poached by a competitor.

Robbin was among the Apple executives who helped persuade Jobs to allow computers running Microsoft Corp's Windows software to use iTunes, according to the biography, a move that helped the company add millions of new customers. The iTunes digital store, with more than 225 million registered users, generated almost $1.5 billion last quarter.

Robbin also was closely involved with the development of the iPod, including participating in a crucial 2001 meeting when Apple decided on the spin-wheel design of the digital music player and charted its expansion beyond personal computers to mobile computing, according to the book.
